Acquisition:
Walpole purchased the eagle, which had been excavated [ 1742 ] in the garden of the Boccapadugli family near the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. He was reportedly captivated by the "glorious fowl".
Displayed currently again at Strawberry Hill: [ LONDON ] [ current owner SCOTLAND - Earl of Wemyss & March ]
The eagle was displayed on a marble funerary altar at Strawberry Hill, a mansion that Walpole transformed into a Gothic Revival style home.

The eagle is based on the Walpole eagle with unfurled wings and arguably holds elements of the Hamilton Zeus/Jupiter eagle with furled wings too.

1; the size of the eagle is approx 77 cm head to toe [ claw ] , excluding the bulbous floral base. This size corresponds to the Walpole Eagle which has a flatter base , overall a similar size.
