Hi, I’m Leah! Today I’m tackling one of those projects we all tend to put off, sorting my overflowing scrap bin. Over time, my leftover fabrics have piled up without being trimmed or put away, so it’s time to turn that messy heap into neatly organized, ready-to-use pieces.
In this video, I’ll walk you through my process for:
🧵 Sorting scraps by size and shape
🧵 Deciding which pieces to keep, cut down, or toss
🧵 Pressing, trimming, and storing strips from 5" down to 1"
🧵 Pulling special novelty prints for Polaroid quilt blocks
🧵 Organizing scraps for ongoing projects like my scrappy nine patch
You’ll see how I handle leftover backing fabric, orphan blocks, novelty prints, triangles, and even fabric that’s been in my stash for over 20 years! By the end, everything is tucked away into size-coded bins, ready for my next quilt.
If your scrap pile feels overwhelming, I hope this gives you ideas for breaking it down into manageable steps. Whether you sort by size, color, or project, having a system makes it so much easier to turn leftovers into something beautiful.
💡 Tip: Don’t wait until the bin is overflowing—sorting after each project saves a LOT of time later!
