The Christmas tree lights twinkled mockingly in our family room as my brother Daniel carved the ham with theatrical precision. He'd been holding court all evening, regaling everyone with stories from his first year as a resident physician at the local community hospital. My parents hung on his every word like he was delivering medical gospel.
"And then the attending let me close the incision myself," Daniel said, his chest puffed with pride. "He said I have natural surgical instincts."
I shifted uncomfortably in my chair, the swollen lymph nodes in my neck throbbing with each movement. For the past three months, I'd been dealing with increasingly severe symptoms – night sweats that left my sheets drenched, unexplained weight loss, and a persistent fatigue that made my job as a software engineer nearly impossible to maintain.
"That's wonderful, sweetheart," my mother gushed, refilling Daniel's wine glass. "Dr. Peterson always said you'd make an excellent surgeon."
My sister Emma nodded enthusiastically. "Unlike some people who think they know better than actual doctors." Her pointed look in my direction wasn't subtle.
