Syrian army captures areas in ISIL stronghold of al-Mayadeen

Syria's army and its allies have captured areas of al-Mayadin in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor, pushing an advance on the eastern city seen as the Islamic State's remaining main base in the country. Meanwhile, Syrian and Russian warplanes destroyed ISIL vehicles and positions in the town of Ashara, between Mayadeen and the city of Bukamal, another ISIL stronghold near the Iraqi border.
