The Netherlands is considering developing heated bike trails warmed by solar energy stored during the summer to combat winter snow and ice. The scheme utilizes an "asphalt collector" technology. Water pipes are buried underneath the bike trails. In the summer, water within the pipes carry the heat energy into solar storage tanks. During winter, a pump extracts the heat from the storage tank, and heats the water in the pipes. The government hopes the idea will reduce the 7,000 snow-related biking accidents each year on the country's more than 35,000km of bike trails.
