Chalcocite (Cu2S) optical properties using a reflected-light polarizing microscope (adapted from Spry & Gedlinske, 1987):
System: Orthorhombic
Reflectance: Medium
Colour: Grey-white to bluish white
VHN and polishing hardness: 84 - 87 / soft
Pleochroism: Weak to nonpleochroic
Anisotropism: Weak to moderate; emerald green to light pinkish
Internal reflections: Not present
Twinning: (111) observed in hexagonal form
Commonly associated minerals: Cu minerals, galena, sphalerite, stannite, tetrahedrite-tennantite
