The Neuroscience of Your Dog's Brain: Why Adolescence Is So Hard
Are you struggling to understand why your adolescent dog suddenly forgot all their training? What's really happening inside your canine companion's brain during those challenging "teenage years"?
This episode is essential viewing for pet parents who want a deeper understanding of dog brain development. Hosts Mark Drucker and Drew Webster sit down with renowned Scotland-based neuroscientist Dr. Kathy Murphy for a deep dive into the science of how dogs learn, forget, and behave.
In Part 2 of this series on dogs' brains, Dr. Murphy breaks down complex concepts, giving you actionable insights grounded in neuroscience:
The REAL Reason for "Forgetfulness": Why your teenage dog seems to have lost all their puppy training—and how to overcome it by understanding memory consolidation during sleep.
Impulse Control: Discover why impulse control is neurobiologically harder for adolescent dogs than puppies, and what training adjustments you need to make.
Resilience vs. Tolerance: Learn why building resilience—not just tolerance—is crucial during puppy socialization for long-term emotional health.
Beyond the Basics: Dr. Murphy explains concepts like neuronal coupling and the role of neurotransmitters in learning, giving you a powerful, new perspective on dog behavior.
Whether you're dealing with a rowdy adolescent or just want to set your dog up for success at every stage, this conversation offers practical, evidence-based advice. Stop guessing and start understanding the brain of your best friend. This is next-level, holistic pet care for the conscientious pet parent.
