00:00 Start
00:09 Act one
: in a recent video we covered whether you can recycle CDs and DVDS - and the answer is yes.
This raised the question as to whether older systems like VHS cassette tapes can also be recycled - so we will cover that today.
I somehow find it amazing that many people have many VHS cassettes still in their homes - and I wonder if they still even work - but let's get to the task in hand - can they be recycled,
00:42 Act 2
The simple answer is that yes - VHS can be recycled. It is basically a combination of ewaste and plastic - and recycling is a much better option than dumping in landfill.
Generally, VHS videos are made from two types of plastic. The case is made of #5 plastic, also known as polypropylene (PP). Then, in the inside, it is made with Mylar, a polypropylene (PET) or #1 plastic. It also contains some form of metal coating.
The recycling process involves separating the various plastic components of these media, which is then granulated and recycled. The plastic cases are recycled with other plastics and the paper are given to paper recyclers for processing. The recovered plastics are used for manufacturing a wide variety of products.
Of course the tricky part is who will actually recycle them for you?
01:38 Act 3 -
Finding somewhere to recycle VHS is trickier than other ewaste. Other types of ewaste can be recycled in many locations - such as Officeworks - or by most councils.
VHS recycling is not as common - and is not covered by any industry schemes we are aware off.
A number of councils will take VHS cassettes for free - such as City Of Yarra in Victoria -and The Hills District in Sydney.
Many other councils will recycle VHS - but it is important to contact them directly - as definitions of ewaste can change significantly by location.
Another option is of course Terracycle - who are the leaders in recycling unusual and niche items.
