CANADIAN DREAM PODCAST: The secret rules of Canadian workplace culture

What is Canadian culture? Where does it come from? And what do you need to know to make it work for you?

In this week’s episode of the Canadian Dream Podcast, Elton is joined by Matt Adolphe, author of ‘Canadian Workplace Culture: Mastering the Unspoken Rules,’ for a conversation about how to crack the code of Canadian culture–especially as it relates to the workplace.

Born in Calgary and of Métis descent, Matt was always interested in and curious about other cultures. After he graduated from university, he lived abroad in Asia for years, eventually meeting his wife in Macao and starting a family with her there.

When they decided to return to Canada, he thought it would be easy to reintegrate into Canadian life, and believed that his international experience would make him invaluable to the Canadian workforce. What he experienced instead was a “reverse culture shock” and he was devastated to find that his international working experience was treated like a gap in his resume.

Having gone through this, and having worked with both immigrants and long-time Canadians whose lack of understanding of Canadian workplace culture was proving to be a hindrance to their career, Matt decided to write the ultimate guide to share all the knowledge that he wished that he had acquired sooner.

Matt and Elton will dive into the roots of Canadian culture to understand how it became what it is today before turning to actionable advice to help you navigate the complexities of the Canadian workplace. We’ll explore topics like the challenges of communication in an indirect culture, the art of saying no, the importance of being a team player, and how to give and receive feedback gracefully.
