Welcome back to our essential Japanese pronunciation series! This is Lesson 19, and we're continuing our deep dive into long vowels! 🇱🇰 After mastering the long "A" and "I" sounds, it's time for Part 3: The Long "U" sound (うう).
Just like with other vowels, the length of an "U" sound is incredibly important in Japanese. Getting it right ensures you're understood clearly and correctly!
How does the long "U" sound work?
When a Hiragana character ending in the "u" sound (like く, す, つ, ぬ, ふ, む, ゆ, る) is followed by the character う (u), it means you should lengthen that 'u' sound. Imagine holding the sound for twice as long as a short 'u'.
Let's practice with some common and important examples:
すうじ (suu-ji): This means "number" or "digit." Notice how the す sound is extended by the う that follows it. Saying "suji" would make it mean "muscle" or "tendon" – a totally different word!
ふうせん (fuu-sen): This means "balloon." Here, the ふ sound is extended by the う that follows.
You'll learn why this う is essential for creating long "U" vowels, and how to accurately produce this extended sound to sound more natural and avoid misunderstandings in Japanese.
This lesson is perfect for dedicated beginner students in Sri Lanka who are committed to perfecting their Japanese pronunciation for accurate and effective communication.
