This video titled "Line Spectra - The Hydrogen Spectrum" discusses the basics of line spectra and how they occur. The key fundamental experimental set up to obtain the line spectra is discussed and the difference between the discrete line spectrum and the continuous band spectrum is briefly mentioned. Some historical information regarding the development of prisms and gratings is passingly noted and the law of diffraction is explained with details to all the terms involved. Then, the video goes on to present the Hydrogen Spectrum or the line spectrum of the Hydrogen atom. Being the simplest atom, Hydrogen line spectrum is the simplest as well. The empirical relation governing the various lines of the Hydrogen spectrum was provided by Johann Balmer and the series is called as the Balmer series. The various parameters of the Rydberg's equation are discussed after the derivation of the Rydberg equation for the Hydrogen atom. Using this equation, four other series of the Hydrogen spectrum, namely the Lyman series, the Paschen series, the Brackett series and the Pfund series are discussed. Finally, the video stresses the importance of the line spectrum and the importance of the discovery of the Hydrogen spectrum in the development of atomic physics.
