The HB Series - The Holden Torana's Unexpected Start

The Holden HB Torana, released in 1967, marked the beginning of a lineage that would become deeply ingrained in Australian automotive history. A smaller, more economical offering from Holden compared to its larger stable-mates, the HB Torana was initially available as a two-door sedan and later as both a two-door and four-door sedan.

Designed to compete with smaller imported vehicles, it offered a blend of practicality, fuel efficiency, and a touch of Australian flair. Engine options ranged from a modest 65hp to a more spirited 79hp allowing buyers to choose a power-train that suited their needs.

While not initially conceived as a performance car, the HB Torana laid the foundation for future models that would eventually become iconic muscle cars. Its compact size and relatively lightweight construction hinted at the potential that would be unleashed in later Torana generations.

Although the HB Torana was primarily a practical and affordable family car, it played a crucial role in establishing the Torana nameplate. It demonstrated Holden's commitment to offering a diverse range of vehicles to cater to different segments of the market.

The HB's simple yet robust design proved reliable and popular with buyers, contributing to its commercial success. While it may not have possessed the raw power or sporting prowess of later Toranas, the HB planted the seed with models like the Brabham for what was to come.
It was a stepping stone, a foundation upon which Holden would build its performance car legacy. The HB Torana, in its own way, was the first chapter in a story that would eventually culminate in legendary models like the LC GTR, the L34 and LH SL/R 5000, culminating with the iconic A9X.
