Director Najiba Noori on ‘Writing Hawa’

Afghan filmmaker Najiba Noori attended the first public screening of her debut feature documentary “Writing Hawa” on Sept. 8 at Rialto De Pijp in Amsterdam, where she watched the film alongside local audiences ahead of its nationwide release on Sept. 11. The documentary follows three generations of Afghan women.
For five years, Noori followed the story of her mother and niece, and her own role in it, a story about women who want to break free from patriarchal traditions.
Following the screening, UN Women hosted a Q&A session focused on the rights and resilience of Afghan women and girls. Curator Claudia Batstra moderated the discussion with Noori before opening questions to the audience.
“Writing Hawa” world-premiered to critical acclaim at the 37th edition of the IDFA (International Documentary Festival Amsterdam), where it won the FIPRESCI Award.
