As part of the European IRA-MAR project, line of activity 5 is dedicated to studies for the integrated response to emergencies at sea resulting from pollution, through the use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS, Drones).

Within the week dedicated to the various tests, which runs from 2nd to 6th October, the coordinators have planned a meeting on the afternoon of 3rd October to present the activities to the invited observers, then dedicating the morning of 4th October to the start of the first of the planned tests.

The operations will take place in Ventotene, with the main aim of testing the use of drones in different hypothetical scenarios of oil spills and other hazardous substances (HNS) affecting marine and coastal areas, including the monitoring of marine avifauna.

ISPRA participates as a partner in a project financed by the European Commission – Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) (Call 2021 UCPM- Union Civil Protection Mechanism Topic: UCPM-2021-PP-MARIPOL — Prevention and Preparedness for Marine Pollution at Sea and on Shore —Call: UCPM – 2021 -PP Project 101048435 entitled “Improving the Integrated Response to pollution Accident at sea and chemical risk in port” lasting 24 months: acronym IRA-MAR.

The aim of the project is to improve preparedness and response to maritime pollution through an integrated approach (land-sea interface) and to chemical risk in ports for the participating countries: Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Morocco, Portugal and Tunisia.

The beneficiary countries have identified gaps that need to be filled to improve their knowledge and operational capabilities. The project aims to reduce these gaps through tool development, training and knowledge improvement.

The project is the continuation of a previous WESTMoPoCo (Western Mediterranean Region Marine Oil and HNS Pollution Cooperation) project always focused on cooperation between beneficiary countries in terms of preparation and fight against marine pollution from hydrocarbons and harmful and potentially dangerous substances (HNS).
