April 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the discredited Widgery Tribunal report into Bloody Sunday. To mark the anniversary of one of the biggest cover-ups in British legal history, the Bloody Sunday Trust and Pat Finucane Centre have organised a panel discussion titled 'From Widgery to Impunity'. This panel features 3 senior legal experts - human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, solicitor Patricia Coyle, and Prof. Christine Bell, and is chaired by journalist Amanda Ferguson.
About the panel:
Gareth Peirce is a human rights lawyer who represented the Guildford Four, Birmingham Six and Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg, among others. Patricia Coyle is a Derry-born solicitor whose ground breaking research in the National Archives was instrumental in having the second Bloody Sunday Enquiry established, and she is currently active in a number of ongoing legacy cases including the Derry Four. Belfast-born Christine Bell is Professor of Law at the University of Edinburgh, a former Director of the Bloody Sunday Trust and former member of both the Committee on the Administration of Justice and the Human Rights Commission. Christine is a renowned academic in the field of human rights and transitional justice.
