Believed to have been constructed in the 17th century, Dirang Dzong served as a strategic fortification to protect the Monpa community from invasions. Over time, it evolved into an administrative center under Tibetan influence, with officials known as Dzongpons overseeing governance and tax collection. The fortress also played roles during significant historical events, including serving as a jail during the World Wars.

Dirang Dzong showcases traditional Monpa architecture, characterized by stone and wood constructions designed to withstand the region’s cold climate. The fort comprises four stories of fortified stone slabs supported by wooden logs, with an entrance adorned with local architectural designs. Surrounding the fort is a village that dates back to at least the 9th century, featuring narrow lanes and stone houses that reflect the area’s historical continuity.
