Waveshaping The Key To Aggressive Sounds

In this tutorial, I go over the waveshaper inside of Serum to help you in creating some unique aggressive sounds. I find this technique is useful for people utilizing heavy basslines in their music. You can also create some very driven distorted leads that you can find in some of your favorite Electro House and Bass House tracks.

Give Waveshaping a chance and follow the tutorial to figure out how to properly shape your sound after you've done your distortion to take things further to create Wubz and bass hits. Signal Flow is key after distorting a bass heavily enough.

Some information from the Serum Manual on how the shaper is setup. I find this information is cool and helps a bit, but at the end of the day I feel experimenting and getting a feel for it is the way to go. The X-Shaper I use is Symmetric and can distort a lot harder than Asym.

“X-shaper (Asym)” is an asymmetric waveshaper. In this case, the
middle of the graph represents silence (-INF dB input and output), the
top-right represents the highest positive value to the signal, and the
lower-left represents the highest possible negative value. Asymmetric
distortion allows you to bring out the even-order harmonics not typically
found in a standard symmetric distortion (such as clipping). This is often
the case in guitar amps, one pole will be distorting (e.g. flatline) while
the other pole may remain relatively undistorted.

“X-shaper” is a symmetric waveshaper, the lower-left point on the graph
represents silence (-INF dB for input and output), and the top-right point
representing the highest level (0 dB for input and output).
