🐑 How to Make Tallow (Rendered Lamb or Beef Fat)
Ingredients:
Lamb or beef fat (suet or tail fat)
A little water (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the fat:
Trim off any meat, blood, or connective tissue from the fat. Cut the fat into small cubes or grind it for faster rendering.
2. Melt the fat:
Place the fat pieces in a large pot or slow cooker. You can add a few tablespoons of water to prevent burning at the beginning.
3. Render slowly:
Heat on low heat. As the fat melts, it will release liquid oil and leave behind small solid bits (cracklings). Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.
4. Strain the oil:
Once most of the fat has melted and the cracklings turn golden brown, remove the pot from heat. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a heatproof container.
5. Cool and store:
Let the strained oil cool completely. It will solidify into a creamy white fat called tallow.
