WHAT IS PAGET’S DISEASE AND HOW TO MANAGE IT?


Paget’s disease is a type of bone disorder where it interrupts the normal process of recycling in the body and helps in the formation of new bone tissues and aids in replacing the old tissues. Paget’s disease can become severe over a period leading to fractures and fragile bones. Paget’s disease most commonly involves the pelvis, skull, legs, and spine. Paget’s disease is more commonly seen in old age and you are at increased risk to suffer from Paget’s disease if you have a family history. Paget’s disease can result in certain complications like fractured bones, nerve impingement within the spine or hearing loss.


Paget’s disease is mostly unidentifiable by patients as it does not result in specific symptoms. The only complaint that most people have is that they suffer from bone pain. The Paget’s disease results in the rapid formation of new bones when compared to the normal remodeling process due to which the bones are softer and fragile leading to bone deformities, fractures, and bone pain. Paget’s disease can cause hip pain if it involves the pelvis, it can cause headaches or hearing impairment if affecting the skull, and it can result in compression of nerves if the spine is involved or pain during bending if legs are affected.


The cause of Paget’s disease is unknown and it is suspected that it might occur due to environmental or genetic factors leading to the appearance of the disease. Paget’s disease might also occur due to a viral infection where the bone cells are involved. It is more commonly seen in people above 40 years of age, more common in men than women and especially seen in people with family history.
