How to re-attach paper to core with glue using the Epson P9570

Paper not adhering to the core is a thorny issue with the P9570 printer from Epson. If paper isn't adhered to the core strongly enough, it comes off, and causes prints to fail. If it adheres to the core too strongly, it won't come off at the end, and the print head will continue to go back and forth printing in the same spot on the paper, and ink will eventually drip down the front of the printer. If you tape the paper to the core, the tape can get pulled through the printer and damage the eject assist roller (thin grey bar), and this will void your warranty and Epson will not fix the printer. But Epson has no recommendation or guidelines that we know of on how to achieve proper adhesion to the core, leaving manufacturers to find their own solutions, none of them sanctioned by Epson.

Often the Epson P9570 will tear paper off the core soon after a roll is opened. This mostly happens with thicker art papers where the paper isn't adhered properly to the core, like the Moab Entrada Rag paper from Legion. When the paper comes off the core, the printer will stop mid-print with a "cannot eject paper" error. This can also cause other printing errors, resulting in frustration and expensive paper waste. The solution (we think) is to glue the paper back to the core, and rewind it tightly before putting it back on the printer.

We've tried taping the paper to the core, but it often gets torn back off, so we've found the best solution is to glue the paper to the core with wood glue (any Elmers type glue will work). This will adhere the paper to the core enough that it doesn't come off early, but not so much that it can't come off the core at the end, which also causes problems.

PH Neutral wood glue is the best solution, but may not be necessary, although care should be taken not to use glue that will off-gas and cause discoloration.
