This video shows the many realities (ups AND downs) of what I experience practicing with my 3-year-old using the Suzuki approach to learning the violin. She is a pre-twinkle student.
Age 10 update: What a journey it has been! My daughter continues to study violin having made many many tweaks along the way. Rewatching this I see my attention regulation challenges and hers come through. We've changed practice partners now 2 times, she has a new violin teacher, and all of these tweaks mean she is loving violin! Didn't know that was going to happen, but definitely starting to see how "the journey IS the reward" (Taoist wisdom).
And there is more good news! I am launching a Patreon page called Practicing with Young Children (patreon.com/user?u=80847095) that has a very specific goal: to support adults practicing a musical instrument with a young child (approximately ages 3-8), to showcase creative ideas that can make practice fun, to pull back the curtain on some of the realities of practicing with a young child, and to help adults know that they are not alone in the struggle. Come join us!
