Professor Maria Dakake opens the New Approaches to Qur'an and Exegesis conference and is followed by Feras Hamza presenting "The Unwritten Tafsir and the Lingering Elusiveness of the Qur'anic Text" (continued in the next clip) to start the conference's first panel, titled "Rethinking Tafsir".
Maria Dakake holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University. She teaches courses on Islam and other Near Eastern religious traditions, as well as courses on women in religion, at George Mason University. Her research interests lie in the fields of Islamic theology, Qur'an and hadith, and philosophy with a particular interest in the Shi'ite and Sufi traditions.
Feras Hamza earned his D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in 2001. From 2003-2008 he worked at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, and is now Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the American University in Dubai. His publications include an annotated translation of the Qur'anic commentary "Tafsir al-Jalalayn" (2008).
