Helping Clients Set Compelling Goals

This session will explore a key aspect of ICF Core Competency #3 - Establishes and Maintains Agreement - which involves partnering with clients to define their desired outcomes in the coaching engagement. This is often referred to as the goal the client aims to achieve by the end of the coaching partnership.

Goal setting occurs at the beginning of the coaching process, and assisting clients in discovering goals that resonate with their true desires is a common challenge for coaches. This challenge frequently arises from clients' lack of self-awareness or their tendency to pursue goals influenced by external pressures instead of their own aspirations.

In this interactive session, participants will learn to help clients set compelling goals using the STRETCH Goal framework. This simple method aids coaches in crafting powerful questions and listening more deeply. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to facilitate impactful coaching conversations that empower clients to pursue meaningful objectives aligned with what matters most to them.

About the Speaker: Julius Ordonez, MCC, ACTC

Julius Ordoñez brings over 20 years of extensive experience in organizational, leadership, and team development, alongside executive coaching, management consulting, and mentoring.

A pioneer in coaching in Asia, he founded the ICF Philippines Chapter and became the country’s first ICF Master Certified Coach. He was also among the first globally to receive the ICF Advanced Certification in Team Coaching.

From 2015 to 2017, he served as President of the Asia Pacific Alliance of Coaches (APAC), a prestigious organization for professional coaches in the region.

Through his ICF-accredited coaching courses, he has trained and mentored hundreds of professional coaches and thousands of leaders worldwide, helping local and multinational companies build a coaching culture. In 2025, he received Asia’s Distinguished Leader in Professional Coaching Award for his significant contributions to the coaching industry across Asia and beyond.
