There are few tales of spying and espionage shrouded in as much mystery as the death of Ashraf Marwan. He was an Egyptian politician, businessman, and a spy for the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad.
Codenamed “Angel”, Ashraf Marwan is credited by the Mossad with having saved Israel during the 1973 Arab–Israeli War.
However, both Egypt and Israel claim him as a national hero, and whether Marwan was a genuine spy for Israel, or an Egyptian patriot and double agent, is not settled.
A peaceful passing at the end of a long life is a luxury that few spies have enjoyed, and Ashraf Marwan is no exception.
On the 27th of June 2007, at around 1:30pm, Marwan fell from the fifth floor of his £4.4m London flat located at number 24 Carlton House Terrace. He landed in a private rose garden, succumbing to his injuries before paramedics arrived on the scene.
Conspicuously missing from Marwan’s apartment on the day of his death was the only known manuscript of his unfinished memoirs.
Marwan's identity as a Mossad spy was made public in a court judgment following a libel court case between two senior former Israeli officers, namely, Eli Zeira, and the former head of the Mossad itself, Zvi Zamir.
The judgment was made public on the 14th of June 2007. Within 13 days, Ashraf Marwan was dead.
The question remaining unanswered to this day is, “did he jump or was he pushed”?
