Terence Crawford solidified his legacy as one of boxing’s all-time greats with a historic win over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Saturday night.
Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) shocked the sport by moving up two weight classes to dethrone Canelo of his undisputed super middleweight titles in front of 70,000 fans at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. He earned a unanimous decision, with two judges scoring it 115-113 and the third 116-112.
Already the first male boxer of the four-belt era to become undisputed in two divisions, Crawford made history again by becoming the first to do so in three.
The fight was competitive early, with Alvarez targeting the body and landing a big right hand in Round 4. But Crawford took the shots well, and after Canelo gained momentum in Round 5, the Omaha native turned the tide in the sixth. A clean hook to the chin earned Canelo’s respect and shifted the momentum.
From there, Crawford controlled the action with sharp jabs, crisp combinations, and slick counters. He even fought through a cut above his right eye after a head clash in Round 9. Alvarez kept pressing, but the bigger moments came from Crawford down the stretch, especially in the championship rounds where he traded confidently and landed the cleaner punches.
After the final bell, Crawford showed respect to Alvarez, calling him a “great champion” while celebrating his own unprecedented achievement. Alvarez, meanwhile, praised Crawford and said he’d welcome a rematch.
At 38, Crawford wouldn’t commit to his next move, leaving fans to wonder if this history-making victory might be the perfect ending to his career.
