​The Priory has stood as a beacon of the North for over 900 years, and at night, the history of this Augustinian monastery feels truly alive.

History & Facts about Bridlington Priory:
📜 The Last Saint: The Priory was home to St. John of Bridlington (John of Thwing), who died in 1379. He was the very last Englishman to be canonized as a saint before the Reformation. Legends say he could turn water into wine and even walked on water to save Hartlepool sailors from a storm!
⚔️ The Dissolution: When King Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1537, much of the Priory was destroyed. The stone was famously used to rebuild the piers at Bridlington Harbour. Only the nave survived to become the parish church we see today.
🔔 The Famous Bells: The bells in this tower are legendary among ringers for their tone. The current ring of eight bells dates back to 1902 (replacing much older ones) and they are known as some of the finest—and most challenging—to ring in the country.
🏰 The Bayle Gate: Nearby stands the Bayle Gate, the only other surviving monastic building, which once served as the fortified entrance to the Priory grounds.
