Nancy Davis: Giving back at Bracewell is really part of who we are. We see ourselves not just as a law firm operating in the city, but as really part of our community. And we especially encourage lawyers to participate in pro bono, which is one of the most important ways that we give back.
Nour Haikal: As a Syrian American woman, I've always seen the impact of what having a law degree can do for people. I used to work a lot with refugees in Houston, and being a representative for them, whether it's through my Arabic speaking skills or otherwise, was such an important part of my life. And even at Bracewell, I feel like I've still been able to continue to give back through these pro bono opportunities. And it's really just reminded me of why I wanted to go to law school in the first place.
George Buckley: Bracewell has an amazing pro bono commitment. I know that for associates in their first year and all throughout, they're able to use their pro bono hours to help meet their overall hours that they need as an associate. And then us in the summer associate program, giving us the ability to work on something like the NVLSP and veterans discharge upgrades shows that they really, really care about bettering the community.
Matthew Reasoner: I think not just associates, but everybody should do pro bono work, but in addition to that, associates should because (1) we're all very blessed to be attorneys, and we're highly compensated by our clients, and we deserve to give back to the communities. And then (2) you also get valuable experience, whether it be in court, interfacing with clients, but you get those experiences that you might not get, interfacing for commercial clients.
Nour Haikal: A memorable pro bono experience that I've had was when I represented a single young mom of five, and she was being asked by the IRS to return a $6,000 tax refund, and she was super stressed and overwhelmed, and she had already spent that money on her family, and I was able to step in and help settle the case to where she did not have to repay anything, and I can tell how much of a relief that was for her, and I'm just very grateful that I was able to play that role and alleviate that stress factor for her life.
Nancy Davis: I found as an associate that doing pro bono work was a great way to meet people, a great way to meet people that I would not have otherwise worked with. And also it was an opportunity for me to lead a project and to really make decisions, to exercise my skills as a lawyer, to take ownership over a project, to be the one making the suggestions and driving the process. So, it's a great opportunity for growth, both in terms of relationships, but then also in terms of skills.
