The questions raised by the cultural history of monsters, the monstrous, and the borders of the human have been at the centre of Professor Wes Williams' research for many years. The recent, emerging idea of the ‘more than human/humanimal’ world brings new life and urgent, contemporary relevance to these questions. Kafka’s writing both anticipates and extends these questions, with its dark parables of un-belonging and transformation addressing race and migration, aging, illness, and disability.
In this talk, drawing on his academic work and his work in the theatre, Professor Wes Williams will explore how the ‘humanimal’ thinking can metamorphose prose into drama and stand-up comedy, and in so doing (hopefully), he’ll also introduce you to Kafka as you've never seen or heard him before.
Speaker
Wes Williams is Professor of French Literature at the University of Oxford, and also a Fellow in Modern Languages at St Edmund Hall, Oxford.
