Presentation: Lessons in Public Parks
Public parks didn’t exist in the UK before the 1840s. As industrialisation
and urban populations grew, only the wealthy had access to private parks,
modelled after country estate deer parks. Inspired by Victorian values,
the idea of ‘Rational Recreation’ emerged. Social reformers believed that
adopting the leisure activities of the wealthy could address urban issues.
This movement was driven partly by a desire to control and partly by a sense
of guilt over the lack of recreational opportunities for the urban poor, aiming
for social, educational, and moral improvement. The Victorian public park
movement was born.
How can this historic park infrastructure now support modern communities’
health and climate resilience? Lessons from the past inform future
possibilities.
