Every Marlboro touring program is built around a work performed in a previous summer that Co-Artistic Directors Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss felt was exceptional and should be shared with a wider audience. This tour program spotlights Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8, a work dedicated to the victims of war and fascism. In addition, the program features Britten’s Phantasy for string trio and oboe, his first work to gain major international recognition, and the youthful brilliance of the 16-year-old Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quintet in A Major.
