It was the afternoon of December 28, 2025... Everything was normal in New Keshav Nagar, Udaipur. But a WhatsApp call changed the world of 68-year-old retired officer Bharat Vyas. A voice from the other end of the phone said, "I am speaking from the CBI headquarters in Delhi. There is a money laundering case against you; someone has deposited ₹20 lakh into your account."

As soon as Bharat Vyas heard this, his world was shaken, and he panicked.

"This is called 'digital arrest'. No handcuffs, no prison bars. Just a video call and constant mental pressure for 24 hours. The criminals identified themselves as CBI officers, police officers (Additional SP), and a judge. The victim was kept 'confined' in his own house for 12 days. He was not allowed to turn off the camera... The fear was so intense that not only was going out of the house impossible, but even calling his loved ones felt like a crime."

"The scammers said that if the call was disconnected, he would be immediately arrested." The elderly couple thought they were helping the law, but they were actually falling into a deep trap.

The scammers even set up a fake online court and made them appear before it. Initially, they demanded 12 lakh rupees in the name of bail. After that, using various legal clauses and complexities, they extorted money from them in installments of 5 lakh, 7 lakh, and 10 lakh rupees, ultimately swindling them out of a total of approximately 68 lakh rupees. They even made them break their fixed deposits.

During these 12 days of psychological terror, when the elderly couple ran out of money, they borrowed from their relatives and friends. When the relatives became suspicious, they filed an FIR with the Udaipur Cyber ​​Cell on January 8, 2026. That's when it was revealed that this was not a legal proceeding, but a trap set by an organized cybercrime gang."

There is no such term as 'digital arrest' in Indian law. No government agency will ever demand money or make an arrest through a video call on WhatsApp." If you receive such a call related to a digital arrest, ask the caller to come to your nearest police station and tell them that you will only surrender at the police station.

Udaipur Police have recently apprehended several such gangs. If someone tries to scare you on a video call, don't be afraid. Disconnect the call and immediately contact these numbers."
