These multiphonic miniatures are written as part of an AHRC-funded research project with Dr. Scott McLaughlin, The Garden of Forking Paths.
We've been working on short "miniatures" to explore the ways that clarinet multiphonics can be manipulated, working on the principle that not only does every clarinet fingering produce multiphonics, but that every clarinet fingering produces multiple multiphonics.
For each of my miniatures, I've chosen some kind of focus - in this video I'm looking a bit at articulation and its relationship with stability. I play through the miniature, and then take a minute to explain what I've tried to do. I'm not a composer, but these miniatures are aimed at composers to help them see some of the possibilities. They might also be useful for clarinetists looking to practice multiphonics!
