The pharmaceutical industry is predicted to be one of the industries impacted by the advent of quantum computing. Quantum simulations of chemical systems are a potential new tool for scientists, aiding in the design and evaluation of new compounds fighting disease, hopefully easing the ever-increasing cost of bringing a new drug to market. We take stock of the state-of-the-art algorithms, looking at current resource estimates, discuss where quantum computers can really help and what further research is needed to really change the way we design drugs today.
