🦅 In Search of the Grey Ghost | 1400km Journey to Photograph the Elusive Northern Harrier

Hi All,

After 1400 kilometers of driving, planning, and anticipation, I finally arrived on Prince Edward Island—a windswept, wild paradise—on a mission to photograph one of North America’s most elusive raptors: the male Northern Harrier, also known as the Grey Ghost.

With my Canon R3, a mix of zoom and prime lenses, and a deep breath of salty Atlantic air, I set out into the misty, damp stillness of early morning. The fields were soaked and quiet, and every shadow could be the flash of wings I’d been dreaming of. Spotting the male harrier would be a first for me—a personal milestone in my journey as a wildlife photographer.

It wasn’t just about pointing and shooting. This was about fieldcraft—reading the land, studying behaviour, moving with patience and purpose. Every step could bring me closer to the shot of a lifetime… or leave me just a few seconds too late.

The male Northern Harrier is truly ghost-like—silent, low-flying, and gone in a blink. But when it appears, cloaked in pale grey and gliding just above the grass… it’s pure magic.
