Homo Heidelbergensis: The Mysterious 'Heidelberg Man' | Prehistoric Humans Documentary

The lines of human evolution can often be blurred into obscurity, given the close proximity, in terms of time, of so many species of our genus. Species have been, in the past, renamed, reclassified, and combined, and today, we will be examining this in action in the case of an archaic species of human known as Homo heidelbergensis - a possible ancestor of Homo sapiens, and one of our closest ever relatives. The boundaries and similarities between our species and Homo heidelbergensis are, in fact, so similar that scientists are still considering the idea that heidelbergensis could indeed be a subspecies of Homo sapiens.

In today's video, we will explore the life and evolution of Homo heidelbergensis, examining what makes it so similar to our own species. We will take a look at how this species may have lived, where it lived, and how it was discovered. Although this is an archaic human with much to teach us, a wealth of information has been discerned from skeletal evidence found at archaeological dig sites, and we will be examining this information to put together Homo heidelbergensis' story.
