Prohibition and Permission in the Gospel (1 Corinthians 10)
God is the one and only absolute God. Thus, when we believe in Him, it is easy to think that we must follow what is absolutely right with absolute certainty, so that we may be certainly saved.
However, this attitude of “acting with absolute certainty” corrupted Judaism and has driven the Christian church into conflict and division.
For human beings, true faith is the process of wrestling, praying, and following Jesus between the prohibitions and permissions within the gospel.
A faith that wields a perfectly clear and rigid answer is not true faith.
Such faith may become arrogance—and even violence.
With such an attitude, we cannot bring glory to God.
For the glory of God and the love of our neighbors,
may we take up our cross, pray, and follow Jesus as we walk between prohibition and permission.
Amen.
