Optimise your Excel workbook with Check Performance

We've all experienced the satisfaction of starting a brand-new Excel workbook. The single worksheet, the clean canvas, and the default settings give us the fresh start we desire and the opportunity to banish our bad habits.

The trouble is workbooks grow over time, and even the most diligent individuals can find it hard to keep them clutter-free.

A new feature has arrived on the Review tab called Check Performance, which detects excess formatting, unneeded metadata, and unused styles, which can all contribute to bloated workbooks and inflated file sizes.

Check Performance first appeared in Excel for the web a year ago, but it's finally made its way to desktop. However, only Microsoft 365 Insiders on the Beta Channel can access it at the moment.

In the video example, fill colour, font colour, text alignment, borders, number format, row height, and hidden rows are all picked up on for the empty cells outside the dataset. The ones in the dataset are not as they contain values.

You can either select the 'Optimize sheet' button on the worksheet view to restrict optimisation to a single tab. Or you can hit 'Optimize all' on the main view to do a complete purge.

Having said that, it's best to go through each item individually so you know what's set to be removed, as you may disagree. Nevertheless, even if you do accidentally optimise, you can always undo (Ctrl + Z) to revert to the previous state.
