The Sanxingdui archaeological excavation team recently initiated work in the sacrificial area of the site, revealing significant cultural relics. Upon reaching a depth of 50 centimeters, small perforated gold discs and numerous ivory fragments were uncovered. The most striking discovery was a severely deformed mass of gold artifacts found in the No. 3 sacrificial pit, initially resembling crumpled gold foil. Expert analysis led to the identification of this object as a gold mask, which was carefully restored in less than a week. The completed mask measures 37.2 cm in width, 16.5 cm in height, and weighs approximately 100 grams. With its intricate design, including hollowed eyes, high nose, and slightly open mouth, the mask represents one of the most well-preserved and complete gold masks from the Shang and Zhou periods in China. This discovery further enhances our understanding of the sacrificial practices and craftsmanship of ancient Chinese civilizations.
