Vehicle strikes are an important source of mortality in threatened urban koala populations. We deployed solar powered 4G wildlife trail camera networks to selected koala roadkill hotspot locations and fauna infrastructure installations including overpasses, and underpasses. Movement-triggered video captures were transmitted to servers for subsequent analysis by Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms. We have also partnered with fourteen local governments and community organisations to allow those groups to monitor koalas in their local area. This research is ongoing, but results are helping build our understanding of wildlife use of fauna infrastructure, which is informing ongoing management actions to attempt to avoid and mitigate against further vehicle strikes.
Dr. Douglas Kerlin is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Environment and Science at Griffith University. He is a population and spatial ecologist currently working on projects to understand and mitigate against wildlife mortality due to road and rail strike. A key component of his work is the use of artificial intelligence powered camera networks to monitor wildlife movements across road and rail infrastructure, and wildlife use of dedicated fauna infrastructure.
