Cycling Scotland C2C: Ayr to Dunbar – Gravel, Grit & Green Energy

Ewan and I headed North to join a group of Adventurers on the inaugural Zero Carbon Adventures Scottish Coast to Coast from Ayr to Dunbar. Our first time joining a group ride, will we keep up, will we manage the gravel, the climbs and . . . will they survive 5 days with us?

The journey takes us along a stunning mix of gravel trails and quiet roads, through some of Scotland’s most beautiful and remote landscapes. We pass through the Galloway Forest Park (a designated Dark Sky area), climb into the rugged Southern Uplands, and explore hidden gems off the beaten tourist track. In the evenings we experience wood-fired hot tubs under dark skies, live music and a whisky tasting at Scotland’s only wood-fired distillery in Moffat.

Each week on this channel Ian (Dad) and Iona share our little adventure experiences, often joined by Ewan (Iona’s older brother) and Ruth (Mum) too.

Our weekends often start with parkrun. Iona is on a non-repeat parkrun tourism streak having now visited over 100 different places since she started parkrunning. But we don’t just do parkun and dash home, we love exploring the area and often use bikes and trains for our travels to keep our carbon footprint low and because it adds to the adventure too. When school holidays arrive, longer adventures are possible with Ewan and Iona both being keen cycle tourists and mountain climbers!
