In 1295, Edward I set out to build his most advanced fortress: Beaumaris Castle, on the island of Anglesey in Wales. Designed by James of St George, it was supposed to be the crowning glory of Edward's so-called 'Iron Ring', yet over 700 years later it remains unfinished. Could this have become the greatest castle ever built, or was it just a vanity project that bankrupted the kingdom?
