Chinese Music Masters Concert Series V
Dizi solo “Past and Present”
Composed, covered by Lu Chunling 72years old
Dizi Solo “Past and Present” This piece features from the “Concert of Renowned Chinese Musicians” produced by the China Audio-Visual Products Evaluation Centre in December 1993. Lu Chunling performed it at the age of 72.
Composed in 1957, ‘Past and Present’ comprises three sections: the opening movement employs melodious, folk-song-like phrases as an introduction, expressing the Chinese people's praise for their new life with joyous and exuberant sentiment; the middle section recalls painful memories, forming a stark contrast to the first movement. The first four phrases employ a more restrained, sombre timbre in the lower-middle register, enhanced by glissando techniques to convey a profoundly melancholic tone. The ascending melody, gradually accelerating tempo, and intensifying dynamics express a surge of emotion and resolve to resist. The final section reprises the opening theme, now transposed a fourth higher. Ornamentation densifies the notes, heightening the fervour of the atmosphere.
