In this video we start making a custom steel widebody fender flare kit for my 1990 BMW E30 drift car. We are fabricating the fender flares out of 20 gauge steel. I'm super excited about this project because once the kit is put together the car will look like no other E30 out there...for better or worse. :-)
Keep in mind: We've never done anything like this before and don't know what we're doing. It's going to be interesting.
Because we already had the plastic eBay fender flares on the car we had cut the fenders previously, but the tires were still rubbing at drift events when I was cornering hard and especially when hitting big bumps and going off track. So now we're cutting out even more and we have to be careful because if the tires meet the flares now, it's going to do VERY bad things. NO RUBBING.
We used the old flares as a template, mocked them up with cardboard and modified them in a few places. That worked great! We cut them out with metal shears and worked to get fitting just right, then tack welded them on. It took a couple of tries to get it fit on the back of the fender and we ended up grinding for a while to get things looking good.
In the next episode we will be welding on the second flare and we will begin the body work. Honestly I expect that to be a major bitch. Make sure to like and subscribe. I'm not sure how many episodes total this will be, but it's going to be an epic journey for sure.
Merry Christmas Eve.
