In this first session, Professor Jiang Xueqin lays out the framework for the entire semester: what we’re learning, how we’re learning, and why we’re learning. This is a class of ideas — ideas powerful enough to reshape how you see history, power, and reality itself.
We begin with Immanuel Kant, the philosopher who taught us how the world works. Kant revealed that there are two realms:
Noumena — “things in themselves,” the objective reality that exists beyond our perception (unknowable to us).
Phenomena — the world of appearances, created by our senses and our mind’s categories like time and space.
In other words, reality is what we imagine it to be. Life is a constant act of imagination.
This semester, you’ll be trained to augment your imagination — not to be told what to think, but to learn how to think. By the end of this course, you’ll understand:
How past, present, and future interconnect.
How to build analytical models of geopolitics (Why is there war in Ukraine? Why conflict in the Middle East?).
How to test your models like an AI system — predicting the future to check if your thinking matches reality.
How to uncover the secret history of the world hidden behind the “official” narratives taught in schools.
Above all, this course is about power — how it operates, how it manipulates, and how understanding it can lead to freedom and intellectual liberation.
