Meet the Lesser Coucal, a shy and secretive member of the cuckoo family found in Singapore. Unlike its more famous cousins, the Lesser Coucal doesn’t lay its eggs in other birds’ nests. Instead, it builds its own nest and raises its young.
Slightly smaller than the Greater Coucal, this bird is marked by rich chestnut wings, a glossy black body, and subtle dark reddish-brown eyes that can almost disappear in the shadows.
Rarely seen flying in the open, the Lesser Coucal prefers to sneak through tall grasses on foot, making it a mysterious and often overlooked jewel of Singapore’s wildlife.
