An award-winning RV platform is now being adapted for commercial trucks. In 2024, THOR Industries unveiled the world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome, built on a Harbinger Motors chassis that pairs an electric drivetrain with a gasoline-powered range extender. The result was up to 500 miles of range and recognition from Fast Company’s 2025 World Changing Ideas awards.
For most medium-duty fleets, though, full electrification already makes sense. The 2025 State of Sustainable Fleets Report found that medium-duty cargo vans and pickups made up 92% of new commercial EV registrations in 2024, showing that battery-electric models are already working for much of the segment.
Harbinger, however, is aiming at a narrower slice of the market, fleets that can’t go fully electric because of longer routes, multi-shift operations, or charging limitations. Its plug-in hybrid chassis delivers up to 440 horsepower, more than 1,100 lb-ft of torque, and can fast charge to 80% in about an hour, while also carrying a gasoline range extender to recharge the batteries on the go.
Preorders for Harbinger’s hybrid chassis are open, with deliveries expected in early 2026. Until then, the real-world performance of this platform remains to be seen.
