पोप फ्रांसिस ने रविवार को कहा कि महिलाओं के खतना की प्रथा 'अपराध' है। उन्होंने कहा कि महिलाओं के अधिकारों, समानता और अवसरों के लिए लड़ाई जारी रहनी चाहिए। लंबे समय से महिलाओं के खतना की प्रथा पर दुनिया में बहस चल रही है। इस्लाम में आमतौर पर पुरुषों का खतना किया जाता है लेकिन कुछ देशों में महिलाओं के भी खतना की प्रथा है। अंग्रेजी में इसे 'फीमेल जेनिटल म्यूटिलेशन' (FGM) कहा जाता है। रिपोर्ट्स के मुताबिक, रूढ़िवादी मुस्लिमों में खतना के बाद महिलाओं को 'शुद्ध' या 'शादी के लिए तैयार' माना जाता है।
