In this video I tore down and rebuilt the main wiring loom on a 2018 Beta 390 four stroke to fix weak charging issues caused by poor design. Big thanks to the folks in @thumpertalk for leading the way!
Since I bought this bike new, I've been through 5 batteries in 2 years and finally decided something wasn't right. Sure enough, only 12.9 VDC at the battery with the bike running.
To fix the poor quality wiring loom, I've added heavier guage parallel power and ground runs and redid the failing cold-crimp connections. After this upgrade, I get 13.6 VDC charging current at the battery, enough to keep the battery charged even with frequent starts on the trail.
The problem lies in the design and construction of the wiring looms Beta included on a few model years (at least 2018 and early 2019). They've fixed the issue for 2020 there is a specific recall on this part as of October 27, 2020 under which dealers will upgrade the loom free of charge on certain bikes.
