Henry B. Smith Jr. surveys reasons why most of the original numbers in Genesis 5 and 11 are preserved in the Greek Septuagint of Genesis. Includes discussion of why the Hebrew Masoretic Text was systematically deflated in the 2nd century AD by the rabbinic authorities in control of the manuscripts which survived the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.
