Within this piece I'm trying to experiment with the mark making possibilities of oil paint. The end result is almost like a charcoal drawing with soft tones and depth achieved by experiments with paint application. This is a very good technique to try and with a little practice it's so satisfying to see the end results.

Apply the paint from the transfer sheet in stages, the first layer will be the darkest tones which will begin to fade as more paint is applied. Experiment with different ways of making marks on the surface (heavy pressure = darker tones)

Allow the white of the paper to be part of the composition and remember to STOP when you feel the work is finished, it's very easy at this stage for the piece to become overworked.


The templates I'm using here are hand cut from a design based on a large abstract work of mine. The 9 panels (only 6 used in this video) are easy to make from thin scrap card which is covered with plastic parcel tape, they can be used many times.

I use these simple templates as a way to protect the white of the paper from the thin layers of oil paint, they only act as a guide to the final composition and allow me to sketch and improvise as I work.

This technique works best with very little paint used, it can be easy to overwork them and apply the paint too thickly.

Materials used :

Templates are made from scrap card covered with plastic parcel tape. (8" × 8")

160gsm Smooth card

Plastic transfer sheet (offcuts from plastic bag)

Oil paint :

Vandyke Brown, Prussian Blue

Pallet knife, rags, sponge, blunt pencil, latex gloves, craft knife, masking tape.
